Several advanced countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, have implemented national plans to address the challenges posed by dementia. They have also established research infrastructure, such as the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the US, the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) in the UK, and Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) in Japan, to support and conduct research. With such aggressive efforts being made in various countries, the need for a domestic dementia research base in South Korea is becoming increasingly evident to achieve the common goal of conquering dementia.
To facilitate efficient data sharing and research collaboration among excellent researchers from different fields who are actively working on dementia research, we have established the “Convergence Research Center for Dementia” that can take a leading role in the international community. Since individual researchers may have different research equipment, technology, and models, we aim to promote more open sharing of resources through the center to enhance our research and development (R&D) capability to combat dementia effectively.
The “Convergence Research Center for Dementia” will focus on a wide range of challenges involved in dementia research, such as diagnosis and prevention, identification of disease-causing mechanisms, discovery and development of therapeutic targets, and clinical research, by integrating basic and clinical researchers from various fields to find an ultimate treatment for the disease.
