Abstract:
Mikoshiba established novel concepts of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident IP3R/channel which he discovered from the ataxic mice cerebellum: He established that it is a Ca2+ oscillator and plays a role in development and brain function. It is a causal gene for human spinocerebellar ataxia 15/16 29, Gillespie Syndrome, ataxic cerebral palsy, pontocerebellar hypoplasia, and human exocrine secretion (sweat) deficit. It is a Ca2+ channel with huge (1,252kDa) signaling hub for disease-associated molecules (anti-/pro-apoptotic proteins, huntingtin, ataxin, caspase 3 and chaperones). It is a key integrator for sensing ER stress response to protect from neurodegenerative disorders. (Google citation 85,870 h-index. 140 D-index 145)
