Abstract:
Spontaneous calcium waves are a conserved feature of developing tissues, yet how they organize tissue structure and function remains poorly understood. In this talk, I will describe how retinal calcium waves propagate through a gap-junction network among non-neuronal cells in the Drosophila eye. These waves function as a tissue-level mechanism by generating retina-wide patterned calcium activity. This spatially organized signaling drives regionalized morphogenesis and matched retina-brain circuit assembly required for normal visual system development. I will also discuss emerging evidence that gap-junction-mediated calcium waves are redeployed during retinal injury responses. These responses parallel calcium wave signaling observed in mammalian injury models and highlight conserved principles of calcium wave-mediated multicellular coordination in neurodevelopment and regeneration.
